History
Legend has it that the name Herculaneum is taken from its foundation by the mythological figure of Hercules.
The first inhabitants of the area were the Osci, followed by the Etruscans, then the Greeks, Samnites and then by the Romans until the eruption in ‘79 which completely buried the city.
Resina was founded on these ruins; it was a tourist destination for the Bourbon court and the Neapolitan aristocracy.
The subsequent excavations brought to light the extraordinary city Herculaneum, which made this area, a stage of the World Grand Tour.
