The village original name shows how ancient is the history of Praiano, only in the Middle Ages Praiano officially emerges between the boroughs as part of the Republic of Amalfi (Duchy of Amalfi). Since then, the town has been “divided” in two residential areas: Vettica Maggiore, the lower part of the town where was possible go fishing, and Praiano, the higher area, populated by farmers.
There is a turning point in 1500, when the “Torre a Mare” and its “dockyard” (called Scarricaturo) was built, which testifies to the affirmation of the town’s maritime trade.
In addition to its maritime nature, the town has an old tradition of craft productions such as yarn making, linen processing, the creation of hairnet and palm leaf folding for Eastertime. Not to forget the precious coral fishing.
