The Amalfi Coast enjoys a mild climate from March to November, and often even in the months before and after this period, temperatures remain relatively warm.
The optimal period is from May to mid-October, perfect for any beach or sea-related activities, while from March to June and from September until the end of November, the climate is particularly suitable for mountain hiking, walking tours, and other types of activities.
In any case, the coldest period runs from January to early March, with minimum temperatures hovering around 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit), give or take a few degrees depending on the year. Even during these winter months, when the sun is out, it’s always possible to go for walks and engage in activities by simply wearing a jacket.
MONTH-BY-MONTH WEATHER GUIDE
January and February are probably the coldest months of the year, although as mentioned, temperatures are never particularly low.
From New Year’s Day, it starts to feel a bit colder, and until Epiphany (January 6th), everything is quite manageable, with the lowest temperatures typically occurring from mid-January.
For those who love tranquility and want to experience a truly different Amalfi Coast – slower-paced, almost empty, and melancholic – January and February are the best months. However, you’ll need to plan carefully due to limited hotel and restaurant availability during this period (read Winter in Amalfi Coast: our tips!).
March offers variable weather, but it’s generally mild and often sunny.
April, like March, has changeable weather, but adventurous visitors can already enjoy some beach activities. Temperatures are ideal for mountain walks and excursions. It’s worth noting that from Easter onwards, hotels, restaurants, and activities reopen, making it an excellent time for those who want to experience towns fully alive and operational.
May brings what locals call “The Cherry Storm” (E Trubea re Cerase in dialect), short but sudden thundershowers. Temperatures are already quite warm, hovering around 20-25°C (68-77°F), making it perfect for beach activities and swimming. Boat trips, coastal walks, and mountain tours are also in full swing.
June is a sweet spot for temperatures, warm enough to enjoy beaches and sea activities, yet not overwhelmingly hot, allowing visitors to explore and take excursions throughout the day.
July brings the full summer heat, making it ideal for beach lovers and sun seekers. Mountain excursions are best undertaken early in the morning, as the sun rises early. By lunchtime, you’ll want to be either enjoying a meal at a nice restaurant or taking a refreshing dip in the sea.
August is definitely the hottest month with the highest humidity levels, making it particularly suitable for beach activities and water sports.
September is considered an exceptional month: winds and currents completely clear the sky and sea, making them crystal-clear with particularly vibrant colors. Nature is still very colorful, and mild temperatures allow visitors to enjoy both the coastal maritime aspects and hiking activities.
Regarding October, typically the first half is excellent for any activity, just like September. With a bit of luck, those who book during this period might experience similar weather conditions until mid-November. However, by the end of October, all beach facilities tend to close.
With the beginning of November, many restaurants and hotels also close to prepare for the new working season. November is particularly suitable for excursions along the coast, preferably by car, as weather becomes more unpredictable during this time of year. The sea is often rough, and ferry services, even on operating routes, might be interrupted.
Temperatures remain mild, there are fewer tourists, and it’s very pleasant to walk on the beach and enjoy an aperitif, though it’s certainly not suitable for swimming.
In December, the absence of traffic makes it very pleasant to travel along the coast, perhaps by renting a car (Articolo fittare un auto in costiera). Temperatures hover around 15 degrees Celsius (59°F), and days are often sunny.
December 8th onwards, the Coast prepares for Christmas, with colored lights and markets quite different from typical Northern European Christmas markets: here, local products and traditions, such as ceramics, take on holiday themes while maintaining their Mediterranean character, perfectly reflecting the essence of the Amalfi Coast.
